Engineering Technician
Annual Salary: $46,419 - $71,286
Performs intermediate technical and customer service work within the Engineering division of the Public Works Department.


Examples of Duties
• Provides specifications, drawings, and technical assistance relative to engineering related
  projects.
• Inspects capital and private development construction projects to ensure that work is completed in accordance with the approved plan, city code, and regulations.
• Updates and organizes engineering data and department's maps, including City's base maps
  and related maps.
• Maintains map, deed, subdivision, parcel and street light log files.
• Tracks, updates and organizes various statistical data.
• Explains and interprets applicable City codes and construction standards with developers,
  engineers, contractors or their representatives. 
• Performs field surveying work for projects.
• Tabulates and plots field survey data.
• Responds to a variety of information requests.
• Provides clerical and technical support responding to complaints and questions.
• Other duties as assigned.
 


Education & Experience
• High School diploma and seven to ten years directly related experience or, two years of college or Associate's degree and two to less than five years directly related experience, or a Bachelor's Degree and less than two years directly related experience or, any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with Computer Aided Design tools (CAD) and related land development applications as well as Geographic Information System (GIS) processes desirable.
• A valid Virginia driver's license.
• Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening and criminal background check.
  
  

Physical Demands & Work Environment
The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough or difficult surfaces; recurring stooping, climbing or walking; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 25 pounds and may require occasional lifting of objects weighing in excess of 25 pounds. The work may require specific, but common physical characteristics and abilities such as mobility and dexterity.

The work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shield.
