Under general supervision, this position performs difficult and skilled technical work maintaining City vehicles and equipment. This position repairs and maintains gasoline, diesel, alternative fuels, and hybrid engines; and performs various repairs, maintenance, and welding tasks on small and light trailers and heavy vehicular equipment.
Hiring Salary Range: $48,713.60 - $60,902.40, depending on qualifications.
Full Salary Range: $48,713.60 - $73,091.20Examples of Duties
Examples of Duties:
- Repairs and maintains vehicles and equipment, including tune-ups, electrical system repair, transmission and differential rebuilding, clutch assembly replacement, oil changes and lubrication, and diagnostic work;
- Rebuilds or repairs air, hydraulic, drum, and disc brake systems;
- Performs small engine diagnosis and repairs;
- Repairs heavy equipment in the shop and on job sites;
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical malfunctions for a variety of vehicles and equipment;
- Test drives vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and to ensure they are working properly after maintenance or repair;
- Repairs and modifies equipment using welding and cutting torches;
- Installs sirens, lighting systems, two-way radios, and other emergency equipment;
- Orders replacement parts as needed;
- Repairs hydraulic systems on small, light, and heavy equipment;
- Conducts state-required safety and emissions inspections;
- Prepares various records; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required, supplemented by specialized training in the field of work; and
- Three to five years of related mechanic experience.
- ASE and/or EVT Certification (preferred).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, alternative fuels, hybrid, and electric vehicles and equipment.
- preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
- safety practices and procedures applied in the safe and efficient use of mechanic's tools and equipment.
- diagnosis, repair, and maintenance procedures on hydraulic systems for small, heavy, and off-road vehicles and equipment.

Special Requirements
- Valid N.C. Driver's License and acceptable driving record at time of hire.
- Valid N.C. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement, required within six months of hire.
- N.C. Safety Inspections License, required within six months of hire.
