Position Summary

The Genomics and Molecular Biology Shared Resource (GMBSR) is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist at the masters or PhD level to serve as Assistant Director, to provide project management support and to carry out genomics assays. Working with the Director, the Assistant Director will meet with investigators to plan projects, determine appropriate technologies and workflows, and will be responsible for prioritizing and coordinating the execution of projects by GMBSR personnel. The Assistant Director may also be required to perform wet lab assays including library preparation for next generation sequencing, single cell, and spatial genomics. The preferred candidates will have a strong understanding of next generation sequencing and single cell genomics technologies, with previous experience in a core facility or service-oriented environment and ability to work in a Linux command line environment a plus. As Assistant Director, the applicant must be organized, able to manage multiple projects, make independent decisions, and interface effectively with our highly collaborative team. He/she must also be willing to carry out administrative tasks such as billing, providing quotes to customers and writing new protocols and SOPs as necessary. The Assistant Director will be an integral part of the operations and ultimate success of the GMBSR, a fee-for-service core facility dedicated to providing state-of-the-art genomics services and expertise to Dartmouth faculty to advance their research goals.

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth is located in the picturesque Upper Connecticut River Valley on the New Hampshire/Vermont border, and is surrounded by a vibrant academic and professional community offering excellent schools, lively arts, and superb quality of life in a beautiful, small-town setting. We are only a few hours away from Boston MA, Burlington VT, and Montreal, QC.

Primary Responsibilities

NOTE: This position is dependent on the availability of sponsored funding
  • Manage the day-to-day to day operations of the lab including project execution and prioritization.
  • Execute wet-lab experiments using established protocols with minimal oversight.
  • Develop and modify SOPs to enable new workflows.
  • Work with electronic systems for sample tracking, data entry and managing customer orders.
  • Train users on the use of instrumentation.
  • Work in a collaborative environment and participate in team meetings.
  • Be present during normal business hours (9a-5p), with occasional work after hours.
  • Assist with data processing and delivery.
  • Participate in discussions with researchers involving experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Become familiar with all services offered and serve as a point of contact for users.
  • Present at local, regional, and national meetings to expand the visibility of the core.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities such as workshops and courses to acquire new skills.
Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Proven organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, taking initiative to advance projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with next generation sequencing and single cell and/or spatial genomics protocols.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and communicate effectively with users and facility staff.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and interact with all levels of staff and management.
  • Ability to manage a small team of staff scientists.
  • Willingness to assist with administrative tasks including generating quotes and billing for services.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD degree preferred, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in a core facility or other customer-facing or service-oriented role.
  • Basic bioinformatics skills and comfort with a Linux command line interface.
  • Experience optimizing workflows to increase efficiency and improve turnaround times.
