The Federal Public Defender for the District of Nebraska is seeking a full-time Paralegal in our Omaha office. The position will help manage day-to-day operations. The Federal Public Defender operates under the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. §3006A, to provide vigorous criminal defense representation to our clients under the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Paralegal provides a range of services to staff attorneys including:
- Drafts legal pleadings ensuring completeness of documents and conformity with pertinent laws, rules, regulations, precedents, policies, and office requirements.
- Assists the attorneys at hearings and Drafts motions and prepares subpoenas for records, witnesses, etcetera.
- Collects, reviews, and organizes discovery and
- Collects client records that can be obtained via online sources, fax,
- Performs all tasks associated with the management of appellate procedures – files notice of appeal, monitors deadlines, orders transcript, prepares records excerpts, drafts, and files appeal motions,
- Provides backup for case management functions such as calendaring and docket
- Performs all other duties as assigned at the requests of staff
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must:
- Be a high school graduate.
- Have an established working knowledge of federal criminal law and procedure.
- Possess good judgment, initiative, resourcefulness, tact, and a commitment to the representation of indigent persons accused of federal crimes.
- Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills including computer literacy (Windows and Word).
- Be able to take directions and work independently.
- Be a United States citizen, or a person authorized to work in the United States and receive compensation from this
This graded position is full-time with federal benefits and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation including an FBI name and fingerprint check and an IRS tax check. Subject to availability of funds.
Appointment is contingent upon successful completion of an FBI background check.
