The Solid Waste Division Facility Engineering and Science Section, Landfill Engineering Geology and Environmental Data unit (LEGEND) is recruiting for an enthusiastic team player to serve as its Engineer II. This is a great opportunity for an individual who enjoys working with smart, talented, and diverse team members to protect the environmental health of the closed landfills and the surrounding communities. This position has a direct impact on the division's ability to monitor air and water quality and comply with Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations.

About this Role:
The primary function of this role is the review of engineering reports and providing technical support to environmental investigations of the closed landfills and in the contract management of consulting and construction services also assisting with the site engineering of all the closed landfills.

Key projects include the environmental investigations for the closed landfills. This work impacts the community and our division by completing the work necessary to stay in compliance with our post-closure maintenance permit conditions.

The Facility Engineering and Science Section Landfill Engineering Geology and Environmental Data unit (LEGEND) is a small, collaborative, and dedicated team motivated by our goals to improve the environmental health of our closed landfills to protect the health and safety of our neighbors. We are scientists, engineers, and geologists with experiences that are unique and instrumental in the successful maintenance and monitoring of our closed landfills.

Job Duties:
What You Will Be Doing:
  • Provide project management assistance to the Engineer III for the closed landfill capital improvement program projects.
  • Provide technical support to the engineering group for the review of scientific and analytical reports for technical, regulatory, and non-technical audiences to summarize and convey project findings and meet regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Determine consistency of remedial engineering plans and products with all appropriate industry standards, as well as local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including Solid Waste Division policies and procedures.
  • Review contract plans and provisions; oversee the work of contractors daily and monitor work progress; take corrective action for non-compliance with contract requirements.
Qualifications You Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, or closely related fields like earth and space sciences.
  • Knowledge of project management, contract administration, budgeting, and scheduling techniques and principles.
  • Experience working in the field collaboratively with Operations personnel and/or contractors.
  • Applicable skills using Microsoft (MS) Project to develop schedules for public works projects.
  • Ability to review and evaluate design documents, engineer's estimates, plans, and specifications for conformance with project goals and requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively in a rapidly evolving work environment that requires multi-tasking, planning, and organizing work daily, responding to changing priorities and tight deadlines, and grasping and responding to complex issues quickly.
  • Ability to take initiative and function independently on assigned projects, while keeping team members apprised of key issues and developments.

  • Demonstrated experience in effective communications with diverse groups of professionals, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated small projects project management experience.
Special Requirements: The selected person will need a valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to travel throughout the County in a timely manner.

Working Conditions:
Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role will primarily work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements typically 1 day per quarter. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Common onsite locations include the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, 16650 228th Ave SE, Maple Valley, WA 98038, Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station, 18800 Orillia Rd S, Tukwila, WA 98188, and King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement promotes work-life balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department's vision of Green Where We Work .

Remote Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance of King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.

Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.

Union Representation: This position is represented by PROTEC 17.
