Job Description:
Teach the introductory course in Ethnic Studies, as well as courses in Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, courses in one or more of the following: African American/Black Studies, Chicanx and Latinx Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies.

Teach courses in “American Ethnic Studies”, “Introduction to Asian Pacific American Studies”, and “Asian Pacific American History”.

Ensure student equity and facilitate, participate and lead in programmatic efforts, within the department, division, and campus-wide, to help underserved groups succeed.

Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent and as assigned based on enrollment management principles and within discipline and department guidelines for course rotation and course scheduling.

Effective oral and written communication with students.

Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s in the ethnic studies field

OR

A master’s in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies

OR

Master’s in the interdisciplinary area

OR

Master’s in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary area and upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline.

(NOTE: The Interdisciplinary Studies discipline is provided to allow for those cases where it is locally determined that a course must be taught by someone with qualifications that exceed a single discipline. The constituent disciplines can include any disciplines found in the Master’s List.)

OR

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area;

OR

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

Commitment to diversity. All applicants must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff. The applicant must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within the classroom.


Desirable Qualifications:
Recent experience working with racially, ethnically, and/or socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups’ experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes. Demonstration of a willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to engage and support various groups of minoritized students more effectively.

Demonstrated experience in teaching Ethnic Studies at the community college or university level and across multiple modalities including in-person, hybrid in-person, online synchronous, and/or online asynchronous.

Demonstrated use and understanding of Ethnic Studies methods of inquiry such as intersectionality, decolonizing methodology, innovative transdisciplinary methodologies, anti-imperialist and abolitionist studies, social justice practices, and community-oriented activist action research.

Specialized expertise, education, or training in the field of Ethnic Studies, including relevant history and contexts, contributing theories, and pedagogical approaches.

Expertise and enthusiasm leading and collaborating with other faculty in the development of Ethnic Studies courses, programming, and outreach.

Experience and/or interest in building Ethnic Studies curriculum and programming.

Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues across disciplines, to design, revise, and implement new and existing curriculum and to advance the development of Ethnic Studies at the college and in the district.

Demonstrated sensitivity to and the ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse class positions, racial and ethnic backgrounds, cultures, religious affiliations, citizenship status, genders and sexual orientations, varied levels of academic preparation, learning styles, and/or disabilities.

Experience integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices into instruction.

Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities.

Experience using a variety of teaching pedagogies that support retention and successful course completion.

Experience teaching courses in “Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies”, “Race, Ethnicity, and Popular Culture”, and “American Racial Liberation Movements”, to a diverse student population.

Experience with curriculum development, including courses and/or degrees, and CSU and/or UC articulation and transfer schemes.

Experience serving as a faculty advisor for student organizations and learning community cohorts.

Commitment to social and racial justice, and experience emphasizing decolonial and antiracist pedagogies.

Equity-minded and eager to work with a diverse student population and will be experienced in culturally-responsive pedagogical practices for engaging Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic, and Pacific Islander students, who are historically underserved.


Working Conditions:


Salary Range: $84,277 - $126,482 Annually

Special Instructions Summary:
This is a temporary position scheduled for the 2024-2025 Academic Year.

Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable. The candidate selected for employment will be required to provide the following: official transcripts and verification of experience prior to the first duty day, identification and employment eligibility as outlined in the Immigration Reform and Control Act, fingerprints and required medical certification pursuant to statue.
