The ideal candidate is a quantitative researcher with expertise in analyzing large, complex data files, including datasets derived from health insurance/administrative claims, cancer registries, and medical records. Experience linking and analyzing data from disparate sources is ideal. The Department has access to several rich data resources, including SEER-Medicare datasets for multiple cancers, electronic health records data, and long-term (10 years) longitudinal data on a prospective population-based cohort of men with prostate cancer; the latter includes cancer registry data, participant-reported data (including measures of quality of life), data abstracted from medical records, and linked Medicare and commercial insurance claims data.

Job Description:

Education: PhD in health services research, population health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, or a related quantitative discipline.

Work Experience: Experience managing and analyzing large datasets (particularly administrative health care claims data), conducting studies involving observational research methods, performing quantitative analyses, and interpreting and communicating study results through publications and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:
  • Experience working with Medicare claims data, US commercial insurance claims data, and/or SEER-Medicare data.
  • Experience performing quantitative statistical analyses of large data
  • Experience evaluating patient-reported outcome data, including measures of patient-reported quality of life.

Skills:
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to present research results and draft manuscripts.
  • Strong quantitative and analytic skills

  • Participate in and conduct study-related activities, including the development of study ideas and selection of research design and analytic approaches, performance of literature reviews, management and statistical analysis of study data, interpretation and discussion of study findings, presentation of study results to external audiences, and writing of scientific manuscripts for publication. Utilize knowledge of observational (i.e., non-interventional) study designs, quantitative research methods, and statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS, Stata) to manage and analyze large, complex study datasets comprised of data linked from disparate sources, including administrative claims, cancer registries, medical records, and patient-reported surveys.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of grant applications.
  • Work effectively as part of the research team.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the faculty mentors.

Postdoc Expectations: The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentors, manage and analyze data, interpret study results, effectively communicate study findings, prepare high-quality manuscripts, and submit papers for publication in peer-reviewed literature. The Postdoc will also be expected to meet regularly with faculty mentor(s) and other members of the research team to discuss project ideas and priorities, study design/methods, study results and their interpretation, and overall progress on assigned projects and activities.
