Small Animal Surgeon



The Center for Myocardial Biology (CMB) and Vascular Medicine Institute (VMI) at the University of Pittsburgh are seeking an experienced small animal surgeon. The CMB comprises several principal investigators that focus on aspects of cardiac biology, ranging from basic investigations of function, to translational projects related to cardiac disease. The new animal surgeon will join our surgical core, and assist CMB investigators with the provision of surgical rodent models of heart failure, myocardial infarction, and pulmonary hypertension.

Collaborate with CMB principal investigators in the development of rodent cardiac disease models. (ii) Provide surgical services to CMB principal investigators, using rodent models of heart failure, myocardial infarction, and pulmonary hypertension. (iii) Provide support for ex vivo research, for example. by assisting with primary cell isolation if required. (iv) Follow guidelines and protocols for animal work approved by the University of Pittsburgh, maintaining accurate records and a safe working environment.


Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations.


Essential Functions

Good writing and documentation practices


Physical Effort

Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Ability to bend, kneel, walk between labs and university offices. Light lifting and movement of equipment.
